Fugro companies have been involved in many of the phases of the development from the early Feasibility studies through consenting to met. mast installation. Some Fugro companies have had involvement during the design phase others progressing to assisting in many of the operations during the actual Installation phase and we have already begun to be involved in the operation and maintenance of the field.
A notable first was during the 3rd week of May when first electric was produced, a small start but the first 2.8Mw was produced for the National Grid.
Fugro-Rovtech was onsite at this time operating workclass ROV Sealion 40 onboard client controlled vessel Normand Mermaid. Our work scope at the time included surveying a damaged 132kV export cable which had been accidentally damaged some time during installation. The cable had been buried but had been dragged from its trench possibly by an anchor. A replacement section of cable was placed on the seabed and the “soggy ends” recovered to the deck of the Mermaid for splicing by a specialist crew. Sealion 40 was involved in all the underwater phases of this difficult and delicate operation. The low profile, compact design and high power of the Sealion helped offer as wide an operating envelope as possible in the high water currents and low visibility. The ROVs advanced communications modules and fiber optic comms lines made fitting multi-beam, 2 D sonars, cable trackers, quite straight forward for our crew who also commented the visibility was so bad they could not understand why we bothered fitting the ROV lights and cameras.
